      If you are webmaster of a vBulletin forum, then there's no doubt you will always have spammers on your forum posting links and spamming your forum with irrelevant content. Be it human spammer or robot spammer, there are certain measures you can take to minimize people from registering into your forum with fake user account, and start posting spam.

      1. Question & Answer Verifcation is Better than ReCaptcha

      While in the past ReCaptcha have minimized robot from registering new account, however spammer have some how finds a way to bypass ReCaptcha. So using a unique question and answer is much more affective. For example:

      Q: Please put two words in captital (TECH, NOLOGY) together to form one word,
      A: TECHNOLOGY

      1. Go to Administrator Control Panel.

      2. Expand Settings.

      3. Click on Human Verification Options.

      4. Select Question & Answer Verification.

      2. Moderate New Member Before Their Account is Activated

      You can enable the moderate new members feature in the vBulletin forum, when they register for a new account, you can review their account first before they could make any new post. After reviewing the account, if you determine that the registration is genuine, you can activate their account.

      1. Go to Administrator Control Panel.

      2. Expand Settings.

      3. Select Options.

      4. Choose User Registration Options.

      5. Select Moderate New Members to Yes.

      3. Add a User Profile Fields to Have New Member Answer Additional Question

      1. Go to Administrator Control Panel.

      2. Expand User Profile Fields.

      3. Click on Add New User Profile Field.

      4. Select Single-Line Text Box, and click on Continue button.

      5. Now fill in the Title text box and the Description text box.

      In the Description text field, you can use the HTML to format the text in red, so that the user know they are required to populate this additional information.

      For example:

      Only registered members can view code.
      6. Set the Field Required selection to Yes, at registration and profile updating.

      7. Click on Save.

      4. Disable Profile Viewing for Guest User

      Prevent robot spammer from viewing other members profile so that they don't spam on the link.

      1. Log into the administration console.

      2. From the left hand menu, expand the Usergroups section.

      3. Click on the Usergroup manager.

      4. On the row Unregistered / Not Logged In, click on the Go button. Ensure that the Edit Usergroup (id :1) is selected from the drop down menu.

      5. Scroll down the screen to the section General Permissions, and set Can View Member Info to No.

      6. Now click on the Update button to save your changes.

      5. Install Spam-O-Matic MOD

      Spam-O-Matic 2.0 is a spam firewall for your vBulletin Forums version 4.x and later. It prevents known spammers from registering on your forums.

      1. Download the Spam-O-Matic MOD from vBulletin site.

      2. Follow the instruction from the author to complete the installation.

      6. Require New Member to Validate their Email

      If for some reason they are successfully registered, they still need to validate their email before they can start posting.

      1. Go to Administrator Control Panel.

      2. Expand Settings.

      3. Select Options.

      4. Choose User Registration Options.

      5. Set Verify Email address in Registration to Yes.

      6. Click on Save.
